Ancient medical science told us our minds and bodies are one; so did philosophers of old. Now, modern science and new research are helping us to understand these connections. In Healing and the Mind, Bill Moyers talks with physicians, scientists, therapists and patients—people who are taking a new look at the meaning of sickness and health. In a five-part series of provocative interviews, he discusses their search for answers to perplexing questions: How do emotions translate into chemicals in our bodies? How do thoughts and feelings influence health? How can we collaborate with our bodies to encourage healing?
Bill Moyers speaks with neuroscientists and doctors as he investigates the mysteries and science of the mind-body connection.
Bill travels to China to explore the practice of traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, massage, herbal remedies, tai chi, and chi gong.
Bill meets two therapists who combine meditation mindfulness with group therapy to help patients who are coping with such issues as chronic pain and terminal illness.
Bill Moyers talks with physicians, scientists, therapists, and patients about how emotional support, expectations, stress, and human contact affect our well-being and our ability to heal.
Bill Moyers visits Commonweal, a retreat for people who suffer from a terminal illness. There, a support system of love, touch, listening, and understanding improves patients' quality of life, and their capacity to heal.
