Thus, the roles of master and disciple are swapped, and various amusing and unusual stories unfold between them.
Episodes
The relationship between Mu Qing Ge (master) and Su Yi Shui (disciple) ends in tragedy. 18 years later, they encounter each other again with roles reversed.
Xue Ran Ran (the reincarnated Mu Qing Ge) escapes the Wester Mountain only to find out that her life is indeed at risk by doing so, as Su Yi Shui has warned her. She is also hunted by the Scarlet Sect master, Wei Jiu.
Transported to the past, it's shown how Mu Qing Ge and Su Yi Shui first met each other. Su Yi Shui was involved in some political schemes, and while being aware of the fact that he was being used as a tool, Su Yi Shui was struggling to save himself. On the other hand, Mu Qing Ge was misinterpreted as a demoness simply because she was a nonconformist.
Still in the past, Su Yi Shui is training under Mu Qing Ge. He was chosen as a disciple for two main reasons: on one hand, he has 5 spiritual roots as Mu Qing Ge, hence he is a worthy successor, and on the other hand, by dissolving his killing intent, she wants to save the world from a potential disaster. Mu Qing Ge proves to be a very insightful and intelligent master.
Life as a Wester Sect disciple is tranquil. Su Yi Shui succeeds in forming a golden core, which makes his master very happy (she considers him saved from the danger of cultivating an evil one). Su Yi Shui shows delicate signs of feelings for his master.
The Taoist helps Prince Ping with his plotting and serves Su Yi Shui some tea with a drop of Falling Water in it. This causes emotions to intensify, and the plotting duo take advantage of Su Yi Shui’s augmented jealousy. This makes the latter susceptible to turning evil in spite of having a golden core.
In order to save Su Yi Shui, Mu Qing Ge decides to interfere in politics and help Prince Su Yu's party. Su Yi Shui is blinded by jealousy and turns evil. Mu Qing Ge's sister is also jealous because she's in love with Prince Su Yu, who has feelings for Qing Ge. She devises a plan and uses Su Yi Shui to trap her own sister. Understanding that she cannot escape, Mu Qing Ge decides to make the ultimate sacrifice to save her disciple and the world. Su Yi Shui finally understands that his master was honest and meant well.
Back in the present, Xue Ran Ran recovers from her ailments caused by the distance between her and the Reincarnation Tree. After things have been explained to her, she decides to stay on Mount Wester and cultivate in order to be able to survive. However, she emphasizes that she isn't interested in becoming an immortal or transcendence.
For Xue Ran Ran, life as a disciple on Mount Wester is sweet. She makes a few comic mistakes and accidentally enters Su Yi Shui's consciousness. By confessing a few thoughts, she unknowingly gives him a hard time.
Xue Ran Ran begins to question her identity. She inquires about it, but Su Yi Shui gives her the runaround.
Su Yi Shui and his peer cultivator are still trying to figure out a way to break the Soul-Devouring Lock put on Ran Ran by her sister. Master and disciple have a good time at the Mid-Autumn Festival. Mu Ran Wu, assuming Mu Qing Ge’s identity, reunites with Prince Su Yu after breaking the Golden Core of the Eternal Sect Master. A Spirit Root from Mu Ran Wu’s heart is transferred to Ran Ran’s.
Su Yi Shui struggles with stirred-up emotions, which causes the Ice Lotus Technique to backfire on him. Crown Prince proposes to Mu Ran Wu, convinced that she is Mu Qing Ge; she accepts. The young disciples on Mount Wester attempt to find a good match for their master in order to heal his broken heart.
Su Yi Shui decides to avoid contact with Xue Ran Ran. Prince Su Yu becomes discontent with his fake beloved behaviours. Ran Ran becomes the chief disciple of the Wester Sect and furthers her cultivation. Wei Jiu starts looking for the Spirit Spring after spending one year in seclusion.
The young disciples of the Wester Sect leave the mountain to gain merit and experience in order to stabilize their foundation. Their adventure starts by investigating some mysterious deaths which occur in the barracks of Wangxiang Pass.
Prince Su Yu and Mu Ran Wu come to Wangxiang Pass barracks to investigate the source of the evil placed on Mrs. Wu. She possesses a rune which is somehow related to the Spirit Spring. Both Su Yi Shui and Wei Jiu become aware of this fact. But Ran Wu kills Wu Niang. Suddenly, a lady appears in front of Su Yi Shui, bringing a key and urging him to visit his mother's last accommodation.
Su Yi Shui visits his mother's grave, then decides to enjoy Ran Ran’s company, even if it means harming himself. Ran Wu joins hands with Wei Jiu. Surching for clues about the Spirit Spring, master and disciple meet Alcohol Immortal.
Ran Wu finds out that Ran Ran is actually Mu Qing Ge, and the Crown Prince discerns that Ran Wu cannot possibly be Mu Qing Ge.
Being drunk, Su Yi Shui kisses Ran Ran and confesses his feelings for her, but she thinks that these are meant for Mu Qing Ge, not knowing that they are actually one and the same person. Wei Jiu drinks the Illusion Liquid and makes love to Elder Tu. Master and disciples encounter a new adventure in Puxin Village.
In Puxin Village, the cultivators fight the Nine-Headed Kui’ao beast. They receive help from the Green Dragon, Meng Zhang. During the fight, Ran Ran recuperates the Qingming Sword (Mu Qing Ge’s sword), which was previously used to seal the Spirit Spring. Thus, Prince Su Yu understands that Xue Ran Ran is in fact Mu Qing Ge. The Spirit Spring is sealed in the Heavenly Bottle, the next step being to return it to the netherworld.
Xi Er is bedridden as a consequence of the previous events. Su Yi Shui is shaken by the glimpse of the future he has seen and is keeping a distance from Ran Ran. Ranwu taunts Su Yi Shui and tells him she knows that he is the Demon’s Child and also the true identity of Ran Ran. She comes along to Wester Mount to have the resentment in her removed. Xue Ran Ran is jealous. After losing control because of the Spirit Spring within him and hurting Ran Ran, Su Yi Shui goes into seclusion, trying to remove it. All in vain. After an attempt at ruin and with a little protection, Xue Ran Ran builds her foundation.
Xue Ran Ran discovers that it was Mu Ran Wu who set the formation to kill the Wester group in Puxin Village and understands the true identity of the latter. She confronts her sister, wants to expose her, but the master simply wouldn’t listen. Then goes on to prepare for the Marrow-Cleansing Conference.
Ran Ran arrives at the Meridian Mountain and quickly passes the first stages of the trial. Then, Medicine Immortal brings her to the Memory Cave, where she sees memories of past beings, including Dun Tian, the one who gives the rare opportunity for cultivators to advance faster on their path. She also finds out something interesting about her master. Afterwards, she enters the White Pool and forms her Golden Core, but suddenly Wei Jiu arrives in disguise, enters the Black Pool and absorbs part of the energy there. Ran Wu uses the Imperial Heaven-Reversing Seal to kill the cultivators at the Meridian Mountain, not knowing that it was the Crown Prince’s plot to shatter the celestial rocks and make way for the waters to flow towards the capital. Ran Wu continues with her schemes and plotting, trying to deceive everybody and hurt her sister.
Mu Ran Wu is attacked by the 3rd prince’s men, as Su Yu has predicted. He finds excuses to avoid her and postpone the wedding. She continues to behave outrageously. Su Yi Shui dissolves the master-disciple bond with Xue Ran Ran and continues to chase her away.
Su Yi Shui leaves Mount Wester, never to return. He goes to the Eastern Palace to look for Xuantian Teachings, only to find out that the Crown Prince is plotting something huge. There he finds Green Dragon's offspring and, bound by contract, he must save it. Xue Ran Ran finally finds out that she is Mu Qing Ge.
Xue Ran Ran, aka Mu Qing Ge, enters the palace in disguise to help Su Yi Shui. It turns out that Su Yu stole Green Dragon’s egg, nourished it with an enormous amount of pills to force its premature transformation and hatching. Further on, he intends to borrow the young dragon’s life to extend his own, because he has been previously poisoned and is nearing his death. Qing Ge receives help from concubine Zhou. But what seemed to be a good plan and work well was discovered by Su Yu.
Xue Ran Ran, aka Mu Qing Ge, becomes a prisoner in the Eastern Palace. Su Yu intends to possess Su Yi Shui’s physical body and wants to marry Ran Ran against her will. Xuantian Teachings tome is found, but there’s a catch to it. At least, the method to return the spirit to its original owner is found. Ran Ran makes use of Ran Wu to gain freedom of movement inside the Eastern Palace premises.
The senior and junior disciples of the Wester Sect work together to help Ran Ran and their guardian escape the Eastern Palace. On the wedding day, Su Yi Shui manages to purify the resentment in the young dragon and escapes the Inquiry Pond. Su Yu attempts to take over his body, but fails. Xue Ran Ran returns the spiritual soul to Su Yi Shui, thus becoming unable to cultivate through spirit.
Elder Tu confesses her feelings to Wei Jiu. He rejects her by feigning ignorance. She is pregnant but decides to hide it, planning to leave the Scarlet Sect after the Cleansing Swords in the Spirit Spring event. Su Yu informs the immortals that Su Yi Shui is the Demon’s Child and devises a trap for Ran Ran and Su Yi Shui, using Concubine Zhou. Wester Sect disciples manage to rescue Zhou Feihua. Finally, the guardian of the Wester Mount admits his feelings for Xue Ran Ran, and they decide to be true to themselves and live accordingly. Ran Ran discovers the Silencing Spell cast on Su Yi Shui in the past, which prevented him from telling the truth about him being the Demon’s Child. The disciples are shocked to find out this thing about their Guardian.
Zhou Fei Hua safely leaves the palace to live in seclusion with her family. The Wester Sect arrive at the entrance to the netherworld, followed by the other sects, who were deceived by the Crown Prince and Mu Ran Wu into hunting them down. Su Yi Shui, Xue Ran Ran, Mu Ran Wu, Wei Jiu, Elder Tu and a few other cultivators enter the netherworld. Also, a gesture of love from Mu Qing Ge to her disciple is revealed.
Su Yi Shui succeeds in sealing the Spirit Spring in the netherworld, along with the drop from his heart, but the fallen immortal Ye Xin (the uncle who raised the Mu sisters) puts a curse on him. This causes him to lose memory of the last 20 years of his life. Ye Xin proves to be Dun Tian, the founder of the Eternal Sect. Regretting that he has sacrificed his family in order to ascend, he wants to start anew and, for this purpose, joins hands with Prince Su Yu. Su Yi Shui becomes a totally different person: arrogant, extravagant, not recognizing his disciples and treating them poorly, stuck back at the moment he wanted to kill Mu Qing Ge.
Mu Ran Wu seeks help from uncle Ye Xin to surpass her sister and eliminate her. Su Yi Shui drives away his young disciples, except Ran Ran. He keeps her close in order to retrieve his Golden Core from her body. Mr. Zeng advices Xue Ran Ran to give up on Su Yi Shui, but she refuses. Ye Xin wants Mu Ranwu to trigger a wave of demonic beast transformations around the world and Wei Jiu to open the Mount Scarlet Flame. By doing so, he can restart the Celestial Sect, which was actually the origin of the Scarlet Sect. Ye Xui was in fact Dun Tian, a cultivator who had ascended and sacrificed his family in the process. Xue Ran Ran finds out that the Cleansing-Soul Curse is unbreakable, but if the person falls in love again with the one they have forgotten, they will remember everything.
Su Yi Shui and Xue Ran Ran put some dots together and deduce Ye Xin’ s purpose. That is to start everything anew in order to bring his family back to life. Ye Xin’s early planning steps are shown. Ran Ran is trying to win Su Yi’s heart yet again.
Elder Tu makes an agreement with the Hollow Sect to assist in the investigation of the devilized beasts. She uses this as an excuse to leave the Celestial Sect (former Scarlet), hoping she would be punished by excommunication. But Wei Jin refuses to let her go. Su Yi seems to develop feelings for Ran Ran again. She discovers that all the new disciples come from influential families, instantly understands his goal and calls him out. Then she takes him to the Reverence Festival, using the stick and carrot technique again, to mould him.
Prince Su Yu becomes paranoid. Su Yi confronts both Ye Xin and Su Yu. All the sects come to Mount Scarlet to obtain the Gold Refining Fire. It is needed to subdue the devilized beasts crisis. But first, they must break the Five Immortal Formations. They enter the formations, and the fight begins. Mu Ranwu transfers back to her sister all the divine power in order to save herself; thus, Ran Ran regains her former skills and power, remembers everything from the past and the Soul Devouring Curse breaks.
Su Yi Shui and Mu Qing Ge connect the dots again and infer that Dun Tian wasn’t really after the Gold Refining Fire; it was just a diversion. He wants to go to a parallel world in which he didn’t choose to ascend and didn’t sacrifice his family. When the fire is found, Dun Tian forces the Celestial Sect to steal it, and the remaining demon energy of the Demon Lord possesses Su Yi Shui. He opens a way from the Scarlet Abyss to the netherworld and summons the Spirit Spring. Afterwards, he wreaks havoc throughout the world. Finally, Tu Jiu Yuan leaves the Celestial Sect.
Wei Jiu feels astonished when hearing that Tu Jiu Yuan lives happily in the countryside. Later on, he also finds out that Tu Jiu Yuan was pregnant. Su Yi Shui, possessed by the Spirit Spring, targets the spiritual channels of the immortal sects. Then brings to life the Two-headed Deceptive Python, which can duplicate someone identically. The first one duplicated is Wei Jiu, while the first one to perish during fighting it is the sovereign of the Eternal Sect. Upon realizing the price of the promised world, Prince Su Yu has second thoughts about the pact he has made with Ye Xin.
Su Yu is kidnapped from the palace. Mu Qing Ge repeatedly tried to contact Su Yi Shui’s consciousness, but failed. Still, it seems that he is there, striving not to be swallowed by the demonic energy, doing his best to help save the mortal world. He destroys the core of the Three Thousand Realms Tower to hinder Dun Tian’s plans. Qing Ge goes to Dragon Island to read the future from the Heavenly Book, in order to see Dun Tian’s planned steps. There, she meets Su Yi Shui and they battle fiercely. After cleansing his body of the demonic energy, she takes different actions to save his life.
It turns out that the Crown Prince was taken to safety by Zhou Fei Hua. Su Yi Shui is saved. In order to persuade Ye Xin to spare Mu Ran Wu's life, Wang Sui Zhi offered to bring him the Green Dragon. Wester Sect disciples discover how to solve the shadows' crisis. Wei Jiu seeks help from the Wester sect.
The shadows are defeated, but the spiritual channels of the immortal sects remain unsealed. The immortals cannot return to their respective sects because Dun Tian has put barriers which prevent them from doing so. The Green Dragon was kidnapped by Dun Tian. The Three Thousand Realms Tower is built on Mount Wester. Wang Sui Zhi sacrifices himself for Mu Ran Wu, then she loses her mind. In the Tower, there are two shadows of Su Yi Shui and one of Dun Tian. A fierce battle begins.
Su Yu kills the second shadow of Su Yi Shui and himself, determined to save the world. Finally, Dun Tian is defeated and peaceful times begin. New friendships are born. Wei Jiu and Elder Tu seem to get together. Bai Bai Shan becomes sovereign of the Wester Sect, and he does a good job reviving and managing it. Su Yi Shui and Mu Ran Ran get married and go travelling around the world. Later on, they are shown to have 3 children and take turns doing the house chores.
